![]() I kind of went into the story blindly but was pleasantly surprised: although I rarely read books about robots or even science fiction in general, I actually enjoyed the story and was touched by it. “Pluto, Volume 001” is a quick and engaging read. “Pluto, Volume 001” is the first manga I’ve ever read, and although I was kind of intimidated by the format at first (it’s not everyday I read a book from right to left), it’s actually not that different from usual comic books. ![]() Whoever or whatever the killer is, he seems to be after the seven great robots of the world, which means that Gesicht himself is the target as well. ![]() This is reinforced by the conclusion of the novel – where he guns down the love of his life simply because he thinks that love makes him weak and vulnerable. But at every step of the way, the reader is reminded that he is simply doing the right thing for himself. Throughout the novel, it almost seems as if Coriolanus is trying to do the right thing whenever he is at a crossroads. His only hope is doing well in the final project for the Academy: the Mentorship program for the tenth Hunger Games. The main problem he has right now is that he does not have enough money to fund his university education. He is instead an arrogant, overconfident, and entitled 18-year-old boy griping about his poverty while living in one of the most imperial mansions in the Capitol. ![]() ![]() This does not mean that she makes Coriolanus a sympathetic character. In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast. One might say they are magnets for misfortune. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Chris Wormell’s beautiful, evocative illustrations also ground you in the action. Philip Pullman sets The Book of Dust La Belle Sauvage twelve years before his epic His Dark Materials trilogy. Bonneville, the villain, is terrifyingly nasty and provides a lot of peril. However, Malcom is a sweet hero – earthy and eager – and seeing things through his eyes helps to ease the intensity. It needs noting that Pullman mentions, but does not dwell, on some very dark issues, such as rape and paedophilia. It’s wonderful to see Lyra again too, although – being just a baby – she is not the main character.
